Bioinformatics for Molecular Biologists (4-day course)
Your first step towards bioinformatics
Date: 22 - 26 August 2016
This course is part of our career professional development programme and was designed to help researchers taking their first steps in bioinformatics. We aim to give individuals experience at working on the command line and manipulating large datasets (we don't require any prior knowledge for this course). This interactive and hands-on course will introduce you to Linux, databases and programming using various datasets.
Over 4 days participants are introduced to various topics, from the basics of Linux, to a widely used scripting language such as Python and the world’s most popular open source database (MySQL). With the idea of enabling you to manipulate biological data beyond rigid user interfaces.
Throughout the week, lectures and practical sessions will reinforce new concepts progressively
• Manage your own database (create your own knowledge base). Free yourself from spreadsheets!
• Parse your vcf and compare different samples and find the most common variants
The learning objectives for the course could be summarised as follows.
• Working comfortably in command line
• Becoming familiar with MySQL • Writing simple scripts to manage data
